I purchased 4 pairs of Keen Women’s size 9 closed toe sandals to compare. I chose the SOLR HighPerformance Sport Closed Toe Water Sandal, Black/Steel Grey, the Newport Retro-w Sport Sandal, Original tie dye, the Venice H2 Sandal, Black/Neutral Gray and the Ravine H2 Black/ Dawn Pink. I am planning a vacation trip to Portugal and I wanted to be able to reduce the number of shoes I planned on packing. I have a pair of Keen’s hiking boots and I already know how much I like them. I wanted something that would stand up as well as a hiking boot but weigh less like a tennis shoe for a lot of walking. I wanted something that I could wear to the beach and get in the water. I wanted something that was casual and might go with some of my summer dresses. Finally I was hoping that if the shoe was water proof it might also serve as a shower shoe. So to recap, I am looking for one shoe to rule them all, hiking boots, tennis shoes, sandals, water shoes, shower shoes and a casual summer dress shoe. I know it is a tall order but just think of how much room I will save in my bag. An additional constraints that I have that play into my decision are that I have a AAA foot and AAAA heel. The Keen hiking boots I have wear are a little wide and a little short but they were a better fit than any other boot I found which makes me happy. With the boots I can add inserts, with sandals that is not going to be an option. I have also previously broken my ankle in several places and had several operations on it. I do better in a shoe with at least a little higher in the heel than the toe. I can also be sensitive right under the bone on the inside of the ankle.I loved the rainbow color of the tie dye shoe. It was the only model that offered the rainbow. I have to tell you know I wanted the tie dye shoe to be the winner just because of the color. Some of the other models do offer a variety of colors to choose from just not rainbow.I was looking forward to trying on the Ravine H2. It is the only one of the four that has an adjustable heel strap. I have not had a sandal with an adjustable heel but my husband has several pairs of sandals with the adjustable heel and he raves about them. I was hoping that it would help make the shoe fit more securely and not slide around. The adjustable strap did give a good fit on the heel. It was the first shoe I tried on and if it had been the only shoe I tried on I would have loved it. In the end the adjustable strap was one of the main reasons I did not choose it. I was thick and hard. The other 3 models all had very soft and comfortable heel straps. The SOLR Sandal looks like it might be adjustable in the heel but it is not. The Ravine H2 is the only one with an adjustable heel. If this is important to you this is the choice for you. Keep in mind it wasn’t uncomfortable it just wasn’t as comfortable and in the end I did not feel like it offered the benefits I needed over the comfort. The next big thing I was looking for was whether I could secure the shoe enough that it didn’t slip around on my foot. I did wear a pair of extra thin socks when trying them on and I will most likely wear them with socks when out and about but not at the beach. The Ravine H2 and the Venice H2 did not lace up as snuggly as I was wanting on my foot. I think for the average foot they would have been great. The SOLR and the Newport Retro both felt very snug around my foot with a much better ability to lace up. This being said I think that both the Ravine H2 and the Venice H2 have more breathing room but they all are pretty open.In the end the Newport Retro rubbed right on my scar on my ankle that ruled it out immediately. My favorite looking pair was eliminated due to an old injury. Both of the H2 models did not feel snug enough on my feet and the Ravine H2 heel strap was not as comfortable. I have been wearing the SOLR sandal for a couple of days now and they are wonderful. I can loosen up the lacing (elastic) and wear them as slip ons around the house or tighten them up for some real walking. When loosened up they are sure to be very comfortable on a medium size foot and I could see a wide foot being comfortable. There is a lot of stretch in the neoprene type fabric used in the shoesThere are several features that I passed over that were present in all of the shoes. Every last one of them was comfortable. I am sure the Newport Retro would be wonderful for everyone without a scar in that particular place. Even though the Ravine H2 was comfortable I just liked the SOLR better. All of the soles had different treads but they all had a ….?micro perforation that is not visible until the sole is bent and then it opens up to provide better flexibility. I looked at the stitching and connection points on all of them and they appear to be really well made. I give them all 5 stars.I hope this helped you so you don’t need to buy four pairs of shoes. All of the models are great picks.
I needed some water shoes, and my feet aren't going to grow anymore (40yo and no more babies thank you very much) so I wanted to get a proper pair that will work for creeking and rafting/canoeing and swimming in the lake/ocean, but also for playing disc golf with my husband and light trail hiking, and will last for the next 5-10 years at least. I started off by heading to Cabela's (FYI, I have a local Cabela's, Field and Stream, and Duluth all within spitting distance of each other, and out of those three brick and mortars, Cabela's had the best water-hiking-shoes selection, BY FAR). In the store I tried on the KEEN Newport Hydro, the KEEN Whisper (mostly they had KEEN and their store brand, Worldwide Sportsman...or something like that), and a few of their Worldwide Sportsman brand. I did not find any Merrell water-hikers in-store (at any of the stores). Anyway, out of the ones I tried at Cabelas, I quickly decided against the Worldwide Sportsman as they did not fit well (loose on my very wide feet, but tight on top and jamming into my leg at the top of my foot). So that left the KEEN. Both the Whisper and the Newport fit well, but I wanted something sturdy and hefty, and the Newport fits the bill on that. If you are looking for cuter and lighter, the Whisper is that. I chose the KEEN Newport Hydro...but they didn't have any in my proper size (size 10 womens, with a wide foot). I bought a half-size down (still fit all right) and went home ($100). I really wanted to try something other than KEEN, so enter Amazon. I proceeded to order the exact same KEEN in my proper size (10) and a different color ($100), the Merrell All-Out Blaze Sieve in a 10 ($75), and the ATIKA All-Terrain Orbital in a 10 ($31). I made sure they all had free returns before purchasing, and waited patiently to try them all before returning the rest. Here are my thoughts on them all:KEEN Newport Hydro***PROS***-Cute-Very sturdy sole-Fits firmly but still has lots of room in the toe box (excellent for wide feet)-Seem to fit okay in my proper size and a half-size down. In fact, when forced to choose, I would choose the half-size down-Larger cut-outs seem as though it would be easier for water to drain from shoe. Didn't try in water so just my assumption-Excellent and substantial toe guard***CONS***-Expensive-Back strap is less comfortable than other options-Heavy***OVERALL OPINION***Great shoe. Comfortable. Heavy. Expensive.Merrell All-Out Blaze Sieve***PROS***-Cute-Fits like a dream-Very sturdy sole-Very comfortable to walk in-Back strap has an extra layer of padding compared to others I tried and it makes a huge difference when walking. Much more pleasant than KEEN-Cheaper than KEEN-Neoprene webbing around foot has less gaps in tongue area compared to the others***CONS***-Not as cute as the KEEN (just my personal taste), but still very very cute-Smaller cutouts compared to KEEN...not sure but my initial assumption is they would take longer to dry than the KEEN when creeking-Not as substantial guard in toe area***OVERALL OPINION***Great shoe. Very comfortable. Pretty expensive.ATIKA All-Terrain Orbital***PROS***-So inexpensive!-Cute-Very comfortable***CONS***-Fit is a bit weird. The bungee on top needed to be tightened a lot to fit on my wide foot, yet they were a touch short. Where the back of the sole comes up to hug your heel was jutting into my heel a bit and while not a big deal, it would likely be a big deal after wearing all day. Would prob need to size up half a size.***OVERALL OPINION***Surprisingly great shoe for the price. If price is your leading factor in deciding, or if your foot is still growing (hey girls your feet get bigger when you have a baby...I used to be a size 8 before my four kids), this would be a great shoe for you.In the end, I'm going with the Merrell. I expected to like the KEEN best, but was surprised at the superior comfort and the sturdiness of the Merrell, and at a cheaper price tag, I'm sold.
The shoes boast a trendy design, providing a comfortable feel and excellent support. The sole has a slight weight and isn't overly soft, but I believe this is perfectly suited for outdoor use. The secure fit of the design gives my feet a strong sense of safety. I really enjoy wearing them.
I am really liking hear shoes and have been wearing them for everyday use and casual trail walking so far. I haven't had the opportunity to take them on a good hike, yet. They are nice, sturdy shoes that offer good traction and moderate shock absorbtion/cushioning and pretty good protection.I see what people are saying about the shoe having the potential for ripping, though. The inside fabric is a thick, stretchy nylon and seems to pull at the stitches. So far, my shoes have been fine, but I haven't done anything heavy duty in them, yet.I do like the footbed because there is some cushioning and arch support... Not as high as Birkenstocks, but definitely more than your average shoe. I have both plantars fascitis and knee pain and haven't had any issues so far with these shoes. They seem to be cushioned enough to help my knee and supportive enough to help my arch.My feet do get rather hot, though, in these shoes and that's saying something because my feet are always cold. This wears more like a shoe than a sandal, and for even more protection, I'll sometimes wear socks. But even without the socks, my feet get rather warm.Overall, I'm happy with the shoes so far. I've had them about a month, so time will tell.Pros:Pretty good arch supportModerate shock absorptionSturdy shoeGreat toe protectionVery good tractionWater friendlyCons:Feet get warm/hotSome of the materials look like they could break down easily or tear...such as the foam footbed and inner materials.Overall, I'd recommend this shoe. The pictures shoe a months worth of moderate use.
These are great multi-purpose sandals. They are extremely tough and hold up well over time. They are also supportive and comfortable. I bought my first pair many years ago in Seattle when they first came out. They were true to size back then, they are not now. They now consistently run 1/2 size too small; too short in overall length, too narrow through the toe box and too difficult to get on/off. So it’s crucial to Size Up 1/2 size. I don’t know why Keen is doing this. The size chart on Amazon is also very confusing. As wonderful as these sandals are, they have gotten ridiculously overpriced. I’m glad I found these deeply discounted. For reference, my shoe size is 10 M and these are a 10.5. They fit me perfectly.
These are awesome and so cute and so comfortable and functional! I use them to hike in the PNW. Can be worn with our without socks. A little tricky to get your foot into it, but not as hard as a traditional show. Nice that they slip on. I wear a 7.5 and these fit great! 👍
This is my 3rd pair of these sandals. They are great for river rafting and kayaking trips, especially if hiking is included. My foot feels well protected, the foot bed is comfortable, I feel confident on rocks and slippery surfaces, and the lacing allows me to tighten it as needed. Loose around camp, tighter when climbing around rocks. I like having lots of room in the toe bed. They do run small. I usually wear a 5.5, but I take a 6 in these. The only drawback is that they tend to get small rocks and sand in them, which can be hard to wash away. I usually wear socks with them when hiking and that generally takes care of the rock problem. The lacing allows them to expand to take a sock and then tighten up easily when barefoot. I'm lucky that my foot matches the Keene footbed well.
These sandals are tough, yet cushy. I wear them on my three mile walk every day, and the sole isn't showing much wear after four months. My feet need a true arch, and a wide fit. This is my second pair of Keen Newport H2 sandals. They fit perfectly and were ready for long walks immediately.
Update review:First, I'm a pretty dedicated Keen wearer, and have three pairs already. My older pairs, a nearly 8 year old Whisper and the 5 year old Rose, are still going strong, but with so many miles on them that the soles are getting worn down and a bit slicker, so I decided to get some new Keens for a trip that will involved caving, tubing, snorkeling, hiking and more.I compared three new pairs to my older pairs. What I really wanted to know, and couldn't find, was a weight comparison, so hey, I did it for myself and am sharing it with others. Note that I wear a women's 9.5 shoe, so weight is based on that, and my foot is a normal width. I tried the Drift H2 closed toe sandal, the Zerraport 2, and the Newport H2., and compared them in weight and comfort to my older sandals (whisper and rose). Weights are for one shoe. These Newport H2 were my least favorite. I took them out of the box and immediately felt the weight, plus they looked giant (and they were--they didn't fit. Every pair of Keens I own is 9.5 but these were so big if I tried to size down, I might go to an 8.5. They also fit quite wide on my feet, more like crocs than keens. But the big thing was the weight: they were the heaviest of all the water sandals at 12.4 oz (351 grams) for one shoe! I felt like I was wearing (heavy) tires on my feet. No thanks! They are going right back. The tie dye color was fun though!I like the Drift H2 the best, and will likely keep them. These were the lightest, coming in at 233 grams (8.2 oz). They wear very much like my very old and battered Whisper sandal (though the whisper is heavier at 9.8 oz). They also fit like the Whisper, except that I find that the Drift has more of tongue than the Whisper which is not a bad thing: It was really easy to get these on and off and the tongue thing was flexible and felt comfortable. After putting these on, I didn't want to take them off! I haven't tried them in water yet--or in my cave adventure that involves swimming into the cave mouth, but I assume they will perform as well as the whisper did when it was new. And the rhubarb jam is a pinkish red that is very appealing in color. They may not be the most attractive, but they're basic Keen style and should be really functional.Zerraport 2: I liked the look of these best. I think they're kind of cute/ugly, with the big soles and the minimal strapping, and I also figured these might drain the easiest--water, or sand or whatever. I got the Rose black combo, which is fun and bright. These are described as "lightweight" though they are not as lightweight as some of the other models (but definitely lighter than the Newports). They weight 297 grams (10.4 oz) per sandal and while I could feel the slight difference in weight holding these in my hands, the difference in weight between these and the other styles is not huge, so if you're not going to have to swim in them, maybe the difference won't matter much to you. My husband thinks they are far uglier than the Drift, but I disagree: I like them. However, they are not nearly as comfortable as the Drift, and I'm not entirely sure they fit right: I wondered if I could go down to a 9 in them. They seem quite beefy to me, more like the Newport than the Drift, and my foot slides forward in them and hits the toe bumper. It may be that I just haven't adjusted them right yet, but my guess is that they are going to have to go back too, though I'm tempted to keep them for non-swimming activities. Still on the fence about these.I compared them to my old Keens. The Whisper (very old version!) I have is 278 gm (9.8 oz). These shoes have been wildly durable and felt great on my feet in all circumstances, though they are somewhat slow to dry. Great to hike in, and were quite steady on the trail til they got old. The Rose I wear mostly around town, even to work, and are great travel shoes that can be dressed up or down. They weight 242 g (8.55 oz) per shoe, and aren't quite as grippy, but they also are more everyday sandals to me, not trekking sandals. Super cute, and I get tons of compliments on them. I'll probably buy another pair when these finally give it up.I do wish Keen included weight everywhere and a comparison chart perhaps, as weight mattered quite a bit to me, as I travel only with a carryon. Also, I wanted to know if I was going to be putting anchors on my feet or something lighter for cave swimming. I'm sure I'm not the only person who wanted to know, so here you go!
This is the first pair of Keens I've owned. Overall, I'm pleased with them but I got them for almost 40% off the regular price. I like them well enough at that price, but I'm not sure they'd be worth it to me at the regular price. Maybe I'll be persuaded in time.Based on other reviews, I sized up to an 8.5 and was pleased to find that they fit me as an 8 usually does. No, it's better, actually. My feet are wider than average yet not so much as to merit a wide width shoe in most brands. However, these feel like I have a little more room width-wise while being just right for length. These feel a bit heavy compared to the ecco sandals I usually wear, but they're much sturdier. For my purposes, this is a reasonable trade off.I find the cord locks to adjust the fit rather fiddly to deal with. But maybe that will be better once I've gotten used to them. The color is exactly as shown here on the website.
